Medical Engineering

The ISYS medical engineering team is involved with modeling, simulation, control, state estimation and optimization of medical engineering applications. We cooperate with physicians of the University Hospital Tübingen and medical technology companies.

Modern medical devices capture a multitude of electronic signals. Functions of medical devices can be actuated electronically. The methods of system dynamics can help to improve such devices in several ways and to make their operation safer and more ergonomic. Many medical measurement instruments provide physicians with data that is diagnostically difficult to interpret and contains artifacts. Mathematical models can be used to identify and remove artifacts as well as to process measured data and improve their diagnostic quality. Additionally, mathematical models can be used to design optimal feedforward or feedback control for surgical tools or to design instruments which could not be operated without complex controllers. Thereby, system dynamics contribute to the development of safe medical devices with a low risk of complication.

The research of the ISYS medical engineering team is incorporated in the Inter-University Center for Medical Technology Stuttgart-Tübingen (IZST).

GRK 2543: Intraoperative Multisensory Tissue Differentiation in Oncology

The GRK will perform research in the field of medical technology to develop innovative sensor systems for "Intraoperative Multisensory Tissue Differentiation in Oncology". These will enable cancer surgeons to differentiate at high resolution between malignant and healthy tissue during surgery, enabling them to better determine if tissue needs to be removed or preserved. In the long term, the aim of the GRK is to employ real-time data to improve patient safety and to shorten lengthy operations.

Our institute represented by Prof. Sawodny is the group's speaker in collaboration with Prof. Stenzl from University of Tuebingen.
