Control of population dynamics

Bacterial cultures can be represented by age-structured population systems resulting in partial differential equations. In the current funding phase, the focus is on the consideration of two coupled populations that compete both intra- and interspecifically. These models are used, for example, for applications in wastewater treatment plants or in bioreactors for protein synthesis. In order to maximize yield and optimize processes, biomass must follow specific trajectories. The goal of this project is to develop control strategies for these kind of system.

Intraoperative Multisensoric Tissue Differentiation in Oncology (GRK2543)

This project is located in the field of medical technology, is working on the development of new sensor systems. They are intended to enable surgeons in cancer treatment to distinguish malignant from healthy tissue with high resolution during surgery, and thus help to decide whether the tissue should be removed or preserved. In the long term, the GRK wants to contribute to better patient safety and shorten long operation times by means of real-time data.
My PhD topic was tissue characterisation based on electrical impedance for tumor differentiation in the urinary bladder.
