Optimized Water Management

Optimization of water management at the Rothensee operations center.

Project Description

In cooperation with the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute the ISYS develops a decision support system (DSS) for the optimized water management of the canal segment between Wolfsburg and Wusterwitz in northern Germany. It computes optimized water management strategies that help the operator to maintain safety and operability of navigation even under difficult conditions, and at the same time minimize the electrical energy costs. The DSS is based on a model predictive control approach that uses a discretized version of the so called Saint-Venant equations, a partial differential equations system commonly used to describe instationary open-channel flow, to predict the future water levels and flows in the canal system.
