Finite Element breast simulation

Finite Element simulation of the breast deformation for support during breast tumor surgeries

Project Overview

Breast cancer is still the most frequent cancer in women. A breast conserving tumor excision is often desirable. However, the surgeon is faced with multiple challenges. Among others, he or she is confronted with a changed perspective during the surgery compared to medical images that are taken pre-operatively.

Thus, the project goal is an optimization of breast tumor excision surgeries by a surgical navigation system. This system is based on a Finite Element (FE) model that contains relevant data from various medical imaging techniques (magnet resonance imaging (MRI), mammography, sonography) that are presented to the physician before and during the surgery. Hence, a faster realization of surgeries and an optimized surgery result are enabled.
