Tissue Identification

Intraoperative model-based identification of tissue properties based on multimodal and multiscale data.

Project Overview

In minimal invasive surgery, it is crucial that the surgeon can interpret the images from the endoscope correctly. A major unresolved issue in modern endoscopy is the precise differentiation of tissue type and state during the intervention in real-time.

The approach taken in this project uses the different mechanical properties of different tissue types for distinguishing between malign and benign parts of the tissue. The image data from the distal camera and spectroscopic data is merged with multimodal data from other mechanical sensors. This makes it possible to estimate the viscoelastic and elastoplastic tissue parameters based on a constitutive model. The segmentation of the tissue can be performed using the identified parameters.
